Old mulch and landscape fabric have a lifespan. Once they start breaking down - or just looking tired - no amount of maintenance really saves them. Sometimes the right call is a clean slate.

Here's what we were working with: an outdated front bed with worn-out materials that weren't doing the yard any favors. We stripped everything out - old mulch, fabric, and plants - and started fresh. What went in was grey bullet edging around the entire bed perimeter and a 2-inch layer of river rock throughout.

The edging is the part people don't always think about, but it makes a huge difference. That clean, defined line between the bed and the lawn is what gives the whole front yard that sharp, finished look. The river rock locks it in - low maintenance, long-lasting, and it holds its appearance through every season without fading or decomposing.

We kept some of the existing shrubs and plants in place where they made sense. That kind of selective approach keeps the overall cost reasonable while still delivering a result that looks completely updated. Good landscape maintenance isn't always about doing more - sometimes it's about making smart decisions with what's already there.

The finished bed sits clean against the lawn line and complements the house in a way the old setup never really did. No weeds working through degraded fabric. No mulch washing out after heavy rain. Just a tidy, low-effort front yard that holds up.
