Some beds just get away from you. Dead grass creeping in, weeds taking over, debris scattered everywhere - it stops looking like a garden and starts looking like something you just try to ignore. That's exactly where this backyard bed was when we showed up.

We cleared the whole thing out first. No shortcuts. All the dead material, the weeds, the mess - gone. Starting with a clean slate is the only way to get a result that actually holds up, and it makes every step after that easier to do right.

Once the bed was prepped, we laid down rich dark mulch across the entire space. The depth matters here - too thin and weeds push right back through, too thick and you risk moisture problems at the root zone. We dial that in every time. After the mulch was set, we bordered the full perimeter with natural river rock, placing each stone by hand to create a smooth, continuous edge that separates the bed cleanly from the surrounding lawn.

The stone bench and the arbor were already there. We worked around both, and what they sit in now is a completely different space. Same yard, same features - just finally done right. The river rock border gives the whole bed a finished, intentional look that ties everything together without overcomplicating it.

This is the kind of work that takes a neglected corner of your yard and makes it somewhere you actually want to spend time. A well-installed mulch bed with clean edging also helps suppress weeds long-term, which means less maintenance headache for you down the road.
